Wall Street Journal: E-Verify, Guest-Worker Terms Return to Center of Immigration Debate

American Farm Bureau Federation’s Paul Schlegel was quoted by the Wall Street Journal in an article on two pressing components of the immigration debate, e-verify and guest-worker requirements. “The concerns about E-Verify and a reformed agricultural guest-worker program, which aims to ease employer requirements for hiring migrant farm workers to work in the U.S. legally, previously proved controversial enough that Republican leadership worried they’d sink the compromise bill,” noted the Wall Street Journal.

Schlegel, AFBF managing director of public policy and economics, explained the organization’s position on the issues.  “We do not support E-Verify unless there is a fully functioning guest-worker program,” he said. “We don’t want to be in a situation in which a grower has a need for labor and doesn’t know where he’s going to get a legal worker.”
