Women play a vital role in American agriculture — contributing through production, advocacy, education, and entrepreneurship, while strengthening rural communities through leadership and outreach. According to the most recent Census of Agriculture, women make up more than one-third of all U.S. farm operators and are increasingly leading in farm management, agribusiness, research, and advocacy.
The national Women in Agriculture Study explored women's leadership and involvement across the industry, identified barriers and opportunities, and gathered actionable insights to strengthen engagement and support systems. This study highlights the significant role women play in driving innovation, leadership, and engagement in agriculture — both today and for generations to come.
Results from the study will be shared at the International Year of the Woman Farmer ACE Summit to be held in Washington, D.C. in June 2026, and a public summary of results will be made available on this site.

The American Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership program provides women with opportunities for growth and development to sharpen their skills and strengthen their ability to inspire change. Learn more.
The survey was open October 15, 2025 – March 31, 2026, and was open to individuals age 18 and older in the U.S. and Puerto Rico with an interest or involvement in agriculture, including those working in production agriculture, agribusiness, education, advocacy, or related fields.
Participants included women in agriculture as well as others asked to share their perspectives on women's roles and leadership in the industry. The survey was available in English and Spanish, and participants had the option to sign up for follow-up focus groups or key informant interviews.
This study is sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee and is funded by CoBank and JBS.
